A group of Silicon Valley startup founders, investors, and executives will visit Manila in July to look into the potential of the Philippines as a technopreneurship hub as well as explore investment opportunities in one of the high-growth markets in the region.

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), in partnership with technology incubator and accelerator IdeaSpace Foundation, Inc. (IdeaSpace), will be hosting the Silicon Valley executives in Manila who were pre-selected and invited to be part of “Geeks on a Plane” (GOAP), a tour of high-growth technology markets worldwide organized by global accelerator and seed fund 500 Startups.

“The Manila stopover of ‘Geeks on a Plane’ solidifies the Philippines’ position as an emerging startup hub in the region,” remarked Earl Martin Valencia, President and Co-Founder of IdeaSpace. “We are poised to become a global powerhouse in technology entrepreneurship, and investors and founders from Silicon Valley are surely taking notice.”

The highly distinguished delegates will include Dave McClure, Founding Partner of 500 Startups, and executives from investment firms including XG Ventures, True Global Ventures, Carita Investments Group, and Supermassive Holdings. Also part of the lineup are founders from emerging startups like Keen Systems, Agility, Fabiart, and Changecoin, among many others.

The “geeks” will be diving deep into the Philippine startup ecosystem through various meetups and events involving local startup founders, Filipino developers, angel investors and other stakeholders in the local technopreneurship scene.

The tour will also provide a rare opportunity for aspiring Filipino startup founders to gain global insights into the way technology firms survive and thrive in the highly competitive startup space in Silicon Valley. Smart and IdeaSpace will be announcing specific event details in the coming months.

Manila will be the last stop for GOAP’s pioneering Southeast Asian tour, which includes Jakarta, Indonesia, Bangkok, Thailand, and Singapore.

The largest privately backed technology incubator and accelerator in the country, IdeaSpace continues to be a fervent supporter of developing the startup scene in the Philippines and has recently announced the 20 startup-finalists for its 2014 incubation round. The announcement on the top ten startups that will be supported for the acceleration round will be released in June.

In collaboration with a number of business entities under the First Pacific group, Smart is a staunch advocate of innovation and supports the directions and programs of IdeaSpace.
