THE 8 th Mayor Kim Lope A. Asis invitational basketball tournament kicks off today (June 26) with two explosive matches pitting Vincare Pharma-University of Santo Tomas against Phoenix Fuel Life-University of Cebu and Madyaw Construction-National University and Greene Builders/Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan at the Lope Asis Memorial gymnasium in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur.

Mayor Asis is expected to personally welcome the guests and participants and make the ceremonial toss during the 6 p.m. ceremony.

Tournament organizer/coach Van Halen Parmis will assist Mayor Asis.

The Bulldogs and the Crusaders clash in the 6:30 p.m. curtainraiser, while the Tigers and the Webmasters collide at 8 p.m.

The six-team, single-round tournament, which serves as part of the annual celebrations of the 11th Charter Day and Bayugan Festival, will also be participated in by ARQ Builders-Lyceum of the Philippines University and Mair Construction/Southwestern University.

The Pirates and the Cobras will make their debut on June 27.

At stake in the tournament are trophies and cash prizes with the champion bringing home the lion’s share of P200,000.

The runner-up and third placer will receive P150,000 and P100,000, respectively.

Consolation prizes of P75,000 and P50,000, will be given to the fourth and fifth placers.

The teams will be divided into two groups of three, and will play in a single round robin format.

The top two finishers in each bracket will advance into the crossover semifinals.

The winners will then dispute the title in a winner-take-all showdown on June 29.
