2 p.m. -- St. Jude vs. MGC-NLCA
IT will be two-time defending champion St. Jude Catholic School and last year's third-placer Makati Gospel Church-New Life Christian Academy in the best-of-three finals of the fourth Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Association (PCYAA) boys basketball tournament at the Uno High School gym.
St. Jude slammed the door on fourth seed Philippine Cultural College, 63-59, while MGC-NLCA eliminated third seed Jubilee Christian Academy, 72-66, in a pair of Valentine’s Day showdowns.
Octoboy Player of the Game awardee Maynard Yap came through with another brilliant all-around game of 17 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to power the Judenites to victory over the Seagulls.
Carl “Mr. Pure Energy” Ong stood at the helm of the New Lifers' victory over Jubilee, finishing with 27 points and 15 rebounds.
The best-of-three finals start at 2 p.m. today.
Game 2 is scheduled on Feb. 21 while Game 3, if necessary, is set on Feb. 23.
Both St. Jude and MGC-NLCA finished the elimination round with identical 6-1 win-loss records.
The Judenites, however, have beaten the New Lifers twice already -- 53-47 in the eliminations and 77-69 in the playoff to determine the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinal stage.
Meanwhile, St. Jude topped the boys' developmental division (12 and under) for the third consecutive season.
MGC- NLCA clinched the boys' aspirants class (14 and under) also for the third consecutive year.
Uno High School also made it three in a row in the girls' high school division.
In girls volleyball, MGC-NLCA outlasted Jubilee Christian Academy, three sets to one, to move within a win of bagging the title atthe PCC gym.
Game 2 is scheduled on Feb. 18.
The eight-team competition is hosted by Grace Christian College.
