Miciano stays in contention

NATIONAL junior champion  John Marvin Miciano is making waves in the 9th Penang Heritage City
International Chess Open at the Red Rock Hotel in Penang, Malaysia.

Miciano, the 17-year old high school student of Far Eastern University, has four points in
five rounds  to stay in contention  in the  nine-round competition which attracted 134 players from 16
The Davao City-born Miciano, who is hoping to  earn an IM norm, is currently tied  for seventh
Miciano  won  over compatriot  IM Haridas Pascua in the second round
He drew his games in  the third and fourth round against higher-rated opponents from India and
Indonesia  before  downing FM Deni Sonjaya  of  Indonesia in the fifth round.
Miciano’s participation  in Penang is being supported by National Chess  Federation of the
Philippines (NCFP) president Cong. Prospero Pichay Jr., Philippine  Sports  Commission  (PSC)  
Chairman William  Ramirez and  FEU.
