RAIN or Shine solidified its hold on the top spot after surviving Meralco via a 106-99 overtime victory in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last night.

The Elasto Painters extended their winning streak to six and are now comfortable on top of the provisional standings with a 9-1 win-loss record to clinch the No.1 seed and the twice-to-beat advantage that go with it.

The Bolts, on the other hand, suffered their second straight loss and fell to 7-4.

Reggie Johnson starred for Rain or Shine with 21 points and 18 rebounds – including the opening trey in the extra period that sparked the furious rally.

Maverick Ahanmisi, on the other hand, led the locals’ scoring with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Chris Tiu and Ed Daquioag were the only other Painters players in double figures, contributing 13 and 11 points, respectively.

“Another overtime game for us. I think this is our fourth overtime game this conference and we won all four and it just shows the test of character of this team,” said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia. “I’m happy about it but it’s still a long way to go for us. We can still get better,” he added. “As long as the locals step up and do their jobs, we’ll be okay.”

Actually, the Elasto Painters were leading by as high as 18 points in the payoff period before the Bolts caught up in the final minute with import Arinze Onuaku, Chris Newsome and Baser Amer delivering timely baskets.
