FLYING V turned to Gab Banal this time in a 107-96 conquest of Wang’s Ballclub for its third consecutive PBA D-League Foundation Cup win yesterday at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Banal registered 29 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists and neutralize Couriers main man Robbie Herndon to help the Thunder stay unbeaten in the conference.
“Gab was consistent all throughout the game. But all-in-all, it was a collective effort from our players,” said Flying V coach Eric Altamirano.
After averaging 34 points in the first two matches, Jeron Teng was hounded with foul trouble, finishing with 20 markers on a 7-of-20 sniping from the field.
But it doesn’t matter as everyone chipped in for the Thunder.
Aris Dionisio also added 14 points and 10 rebounds, Thomas Torres had 12 markers, four boards, and three assists, and Hans Thiele got 10 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.
Later, Cignal HD rebounded from its shock loss to Marinerong Pilipino last Thursday with an 86-76 thumping of AMA Online Education.
Lackluster anew in the first half, Flying V was finally able to get the breathing room they craved for as Banal started the decisive 11-0 run to finish the third period and grab an 86-80 advantage.
The Couriers had no answer for the trio of Banal, Dionisio, and Oda Tampus as the Thunder preserved the lead the rest of the way.
Herndon topscored for Wang’s (1-2) 24 points, but only four in the second half.
Showing signs of adjustment under the system of coach Boyet Fernandez, Davon Potts trotted out his best game to date for the Hawkeyes with 17 points and three rebounds.
Pamboy Raymundo corralled 16 markers and two assists, while Raymar Jose had a near double-double with his 12 points and nine boards for Cignal.
Fernandez was elated with how his players bounced back in the blowout.
