La Salle topples Adamson

October 13, 2018

LA SALLE pounded on Adamson’s  shooting woes in overtime to carve out a 79-78 win last night and stay within the top four range at the  end of the first round in the UAAP men's basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Falcons could not buy a field goal in the first three minutes of the extra session, allowing the Green Archers to grab a 73-64 lead.

It was Adamson's second straight overtime loss, following last Sunday's 85-88 defeat to Far Eastern University, where the San Marcelino-based cagers went 0-of-9 from the field.

Earlier, National University halted a five-game losing skid and avoided the basement with an 88-61 romp of University of the East.

Aljun Melecio, whose lay-up in the final 13.6 seconds of regulatio  sent the game into overtime, finished with 22 points, four rebounds and two assists while Santi Santillan and Justine Baltazar each scored 16 markers for La Salle.

Jerrick Ahanmisi led the Falcons with 27 points and seven rebounds while Sean Manganti, who missed a floater late in the regulation that could have sealed the win, added 23 markers.

Adamson fell in a tie with FEU and defending champion Ateneo in first place at 5-2, while La Salle is not far behind at 4-3.

Coach Jamike Jarin had a sigh of relief after the upstart Bulldogs chalked up their second victory of the season that will serve as confidence booster heading into the second round.

“It always feels good when you win, of course. It has been a long time,” said Jarin. “Because of these young men, there's more reasons to get up and work harder. We are dead right now, but we will gonna get up.”

NU's other victory came at the expense of University of Santo Tomas, 75-70, in the season-opener last Sept. 8.
