LAST year’s runner-up De Ocampo Memorial College and Our Lady of Fatima University took different paths before beating their respective rivals in the NAASCU men’s basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome.
DOMC walked the tightrope before beating De La Salle-Araneta University, 83-81, in overtime, while OLFU showed too much class in downing City University of Pasay, 94-67, to join St. Clare College and New Era University in the early lead.
Handled by coach Ronnie Dojillo, the Cobras had a hard time against the La Sallians but played hard enough to escape with the win.
Raymart Atabay and Harold Lescano nailed back-to-back tripes to put the Cobras ahead for good in the extra period.
Lescano, Tyrone de la Cruz and EJ Canelas finished with 10 points apiece for DOMC, which hope to get a much-needed boost with the return of ace gunner Dahrrel Caranguian in their next game.
Julius Lorenzo and 6-10 Nigerian import Henry Iloka paced DLS-AU with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Fatima relied on Miguel Cabrera and Jeremy Sarona to roll back CUP.
Cabrera fired 16 points and Sarona added 15 points for the Ralph Emerson Rivera-mentored Phoenix, who lost to the Saints in the final two years ago.
John Patrick Aquino carried the fight for CUP with 20 points and nine rebounds, followed by Jayvee de la Cruz with 15.
