Altas gain semis as Blazers fall

DEFENDING champion San Beda and Lyceum of the Philippines University got the job done, clinching the two twice-to-beat Final Four incentives  yesterday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Red Lions overpowered an Arellano University side simply wanting to end another disappointing season, 90-52, while the Pirates eliminated College of Saint Benilde in the semifinal  race with a 77-64 conquest.

LPU claimed its 15th win in 17 contests, with the last season’s runners-up hoping to complete an elimination round head-to-head sweep of San Beda and secure the No. 1 ranking in the Final Four on Thursday.

The victory, also the Lions’ 15th in 16 games, put the Mendiola-based cagers ahead in the race for the league’s best record at the end of the double-round elims.

This early, San Beda is now on a playoff mode.

“Our goal for this game is to win this one,” said coach Boyet Fernandez.

“I’m so happy on how our team responded to the challenge,” said coach Topex Robinson after LPU rebounded from a narrow 79-80 loss to Letran last week.

“There’s a big lesson from that loss to Letran, it really kept us humble and we stuck with each other as a team.”

St. Benilde stumbled to its eighth defeat in 16 games to bow out of contention, allowing idle University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (11-5) to claim the remaining Final Four berth.

In the juniors division, Joshua David shot 20 points as titleholder CSB-LSGH secured the first twice-to-beat slot in the Final Four with an 80-75 win, while Zach Estacio and Winston Ynot each scored 15 points as San Beda beat Arellano, 83-71, to formalize its entry to the semifinals.
