GEARING up for next month’s UAAP volleyball wars, the Ateneo women’s and men’s teams left for Thailand yesterday for their annual two-week training.
The team’s official Twitter account announced yesterday that those included in the trip will most likely be part of the rosters for Season 80 which begins on Feb. 3.
The Lady Eagles, who missed the Final Four in the PVL Collegiate Conference, won’t have veteran setter Jia Morado, who opted out on her final season of eligibility and Kim Gequillana, who is recovering from an ACL injury she sustained in the PVL.
A big loss for Ateneo is opposite hitter Michelle Morente, who moved to La Salle last summer after failing to meet the Katipunan-based school’s stringent academic requirements.
Jho Maraguinot, Bea de Leon, Kat Tolentino and last season’s Rookie of the Year winner Jules Samonte will spearhead the Lady Eagles campaign.
The annual Bangkok training started in 2007 which resulted in a historic Final Four appearance during that season.
Since then, Ateneo has won two championships, four second place trophy and a third place trophy during that span.
The Blue Eagles, on the other hand, are eyeing for a four-peat.
Rex Intal and Josh Villanueva, who were part of Ateneo’s 16-0 championship run last year, have already completed their playing eligibility, while last season’s Finals MVP Tony Koyfman will not suit up due to academics and health issues.
