A PARTY-LIST solon has appealed to President Rodrigo Duterte to order the reselling of seized smuggled rice.
AGRI party-list Rep. Orestes Salon said the seized 1,359 metric tons of rice could somehow help stave off the reported rice shortage.
Salon proposed to Duterte to order the turnover of the smuggled rice to the National Food Authority (NFA) and allow the agency to resell it at a lower price.
The smuggled rice is reported to have an estimated market value of P67.9 million.
Naval forces had intercepted a foreign cargo vessel loaded with 1,359 metric tons of smuggled rice and apprehended at least 15 Chinese and Bangladeshi crew off Olutanga Island in Zamboanga Sibugay.
Rear Admiral Rene Medina, commander of Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) said operatives of Naval Task Force 61 also apprehended 51 Filipino laborers aboard the cargo ship M/V Diamond 8, of Mongolian registry.Salon also said that RA 10845 or the anti-agricultural smuggling law should be fully implemented.
