PHILIPPINE Drug Enforcement Agency chair Director General Aaron N. Aquino yesterday clarified that there are only 289 barangay officials on the narco-list of President Rodrigo Duterte and not 9,000 as previously reported by other media entities.
He said that the number is based on the PDEA’s National Drug Information System (PDEA-NDIS). The official said that those on the list include 143 barangay chairmen and 146 barangay kagawads.
Aquino said that pursuant to Executive Order No. 15, PDEA, as chair of the Interagency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD), has the verified precise data on the barangay officials linked to illegal drug activities.
This information was obtained from the reports of Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils (BADACs) nationwide, he explained.
Out of these 289 barangay officials, Aquino said 41 were already arrested, five died in legitimate police operations, 27 were victims of so-called deaths under investigation, three were recorded to have died of natural causes, five used other names or aliases and one turned out to be a victim of a politically-motivated death.
