Rodrigo Duterte has elevated to the Court of Appeals (CA) the judge who last year ordered the arrest of confessed hitman Edgar Matobato for a kidnapping case, an appointment paper released by Malacañang on Friday showed.
Duterte appointed to the CA on June 19 Judge Dorothy Montejo-Gonzaga of the Panabo City Regional Trial Court Branch 4 in Davao del Norte.
She would take over the post vacated by then-Associate Justice Romeo Barza who was promoted by Duterte as CA presiding justice last December.
Gonzaga ordered in March last year the arrest of Matobato, a self-proclaimed member of the Davao Death Squad being linked to Duterte, for the kidnapping of alleged terrorist Sali Makdum in 2002.
Matobato had admitted that he took part in the kidnapping of Makdum but the Turkish national’s body has yet to be found.
Apart from kidnapping, Matobato is also facing a frustrated murder charge before a Digos City court in connection with the ambush of retired agrarian reform adjudicator Abeto Salcedo Jr. in 2014.
