ON her 70th birthday, former President now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo wished success not for herself but for President Rodrigo Duterte.
Arroyo believes that the success of President Duterte is also the success of the country.
The former president, who was freed during the Duterte administration, celebrated her birthday in her hometown in Lubao with relatives, close friends and Cabalens.
“I have my wishes for the country. My wish is for the success of President Duterte because his success is the success of the country,” Arroyo told reporters in an interview.
Arroyo said she has no personal wishes anymore because she was blessed with so many things.
“On a personal level, I think I have everything. So I have no personal birthday wish. But because I have been a leader, of course I have my wishes for the country,” Arroyo added.
She served for a total of nine years as president of the Philippines. Arroyo is now on her third and final term as Representative of the 2nd District of Pampanga.
Part of the birthday celebration is an early morning mass with the family, the inauguration of a district hospital and groundbreaking of the Macapagal-Arroyo science laboratory building.
According to Arroyo, she was very thankful to President Duterte for understanding her stand on the death penalty.
Before the session break, Arroyo was removed as Deputy Speaker because she voted no to the re-imposition of the death sentence.
Ten other chairmen of different committees were removed due to their rejection of the death penalty measure, which is one of the priority bills of the Duterte administration.
Arroyo said she already informed the president of her stance against death penalty.
It was during her presidency when the death penalty law was repealed.
