OFFICERS manning a small police detachment in Botolan, Zambales early morning yesterday foiled a suspected New People’s Army plot to raid their facility after engaging the gunmen in a firefight.
A Police Regional Office 3 report said that some 20 armed men were spotted inching their way toward the patrol base of the Zambales Provincial Public Safety Company in Bgy. Taugtog at 1 a.m.
Alarmed, the PPSC personnel immediately fired their weapons at the gunmen who were forced to retreat toward the nearby Sitio Bihawo. No officer was hurt in the incident and troops are still tracking down the gunmen as of press time.
The incident came in the wake of a series of bold NPA attacks in the countryside which have triggered the relief of some police commanders for their failure to defend their stations.
The other week, NPA rebels attacked the Maasin Municipal Police Station in Iloilo and stole dozens of weapons and communication equipment without firing a single shot after the policemen on duty failed to offer any resistance.
The attack came in the wake of the Philippine National Police program to purchase some four million rounds of 5.56 ammunition worth at least P101 million and more handguns and assault rifles this year to beef-up its weaponry needed to fight Enemies of the State.
