A soldier was killed while another was wounded in an encounter with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels the other day in Sultan Kudarat.

Joint Task Force Central commander Maj. Gen. Cirilito E. Sobejana identified the fatality as Cpl. Jonas D. Reyes.

Taken to the nearest hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound was Cpl. Bryan M. dela Cruz.

Army’s 6th Infantry Division spokesman Capt. Arvin Encinas said the encounter occurred at around 8:25 a.m. in Sitio Lumoton, Bgy. Datu Wasay, Sultan Kudarat.

Initial investigagion showed that operating troops of the 63rd Marine Company of Force Reconnaissance Group encountered members of the Guerilla Front 73 of Far South Mindanao Regional Committee (FSMRC).

The firefight lasted for several minutes that resulted in the killing of one soldier and the wounding of another.

“One of our troops has offered his life and one was wounded, not minding their own safety to protect our communities from communist terror group. Our soldiers have fought many battles to keep Central Mindanao free from threat of terrors,” Sobejana said.
