SAN Fernando City, La Union -- Region 1 was “generally peaceful” during the New Year revelry.
This was reported by newly-installed Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) director Chief Supt.
Romulo E. Sapitula.
In his New Year report, Sapitula stated: “I am particularly happy for having no reported
death in Region 1 and for having no single incident of indiscriminate firing and stray bullet
injuries during the New Year’s revelry and a significant decrease of firecracker-related injuries.”
Sapitula, who was designated PRO1 director only last mid-December, attributed this
accomplishment to the “vigilance of the police and the people (in Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur
and Ilocos Norte) in the strict enforcement of Executive Order No. 28, prohibitions against illegal
firecrackers and indiscriminate firing, heightened awareness of the public through government and
non-government organization’s information efforts and the inter-agency coordination by health
officials, local government units and law enforcement agencies.”
Accordingly, from Dec. 16, 2017 to Jan. 1, 2018, 80 incidents of firecracker-related injuries
were recorded. This is 61 incidents lower than the 141 of the same period last year. On
indiscriminate firing, only one incident was recorded as compared to 12 in the previous year.
Sapitula thanked the people of Region 1 for the concerted effort in making the Christmas and
New Year celebrations peaceful.
He also congratulated the members of PRO1, the Department of Health (DoH), other law
enforcement agencies, local government units (LGUs), barangay police and other force multipliers and
stakeholders for a resounding success in the campaign to reduce firecracker-related injuries this
