A Bicol judge was shot dead by his neighbor outside his house in Presentacion, Camarines Sur late Tuesday afternoon, police said yesterday.
Judge Ricky Begino of the San Jose-Lagonoy Municipal Circuit Trial Court died while undergoing treatment in a local hospital hours after he was shot in front of his house in Bgy. Sta. Maria, Presentacion municipality at 5 p.m., said Police Regional Office 5 director Chief Supt. Antonio N. Gardiola Jr.
Gardiola said the killer, identified as Wilfredo Armea, was arrested by the local police in a pursuit operation and is now facing criminal charges. Also recovered from his possession was the caliber 9mm semi-automatic pistol he used in shooting the victim, the Bicol police director said.
Gardiola said a slug recovered at the scene of the shooting has been subjected to a ballistics examination. He told Philippine National Police chief Director General Oscar D. Albayalde during a press conference at Camp Crame that the suspect is a neighbor of the judge, residing just about 50 meters away from the victim’s residence.
“The judge was shot in the back and died at around 8 in the evening. However, my men have arrested the suspect and we are looking into a land dispute as the most probable motive behind the killing,” Gardiola said.
Meanwhile, acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio condemned the killing of Judge Begino right inside his house in Presentacion town.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the killing of the Honorable Presiding Judge Ricky Begino of the Metropolitan Circuit Trial Court (MCTC) of San Jose-Lagonoy, Camarines Sur,” Carpio said in a press statement.
Carpio called on authorities to immediately conduct an investigation and to bring those behind the assassination to justice.
