Lawman dies, another hurt in Masbate ambush

CAMP Simeon Ola, Legazpi City -- A policeman died while another was wounded when suspected communist
rebels staged an ambush on joint police and Army troops while on their way back to a police camp in
Bgy. Canaris, Batuan, Masbate, the Police Regional Office 5 reported on Monday.

PRO5 spokesperson Chief Insp. Maria Luisa Calubaquib identified the fatality as PO1 Mathew
Galendes Baybayon and the wounded colleague as PO1 Edgarte Demingoy, both belonging to the 5th
Regional Public Safety Battalion, Bravo Company, Third Maneuver Platoon of the PNP in Masbate
According to Calubaquib, the San Fernando Municipal Police Station in Masbate received a call
seeking for an investigation of a shooting incident in Bgy. Buyo. Joint police personnel and elements
of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Battalion, 9th Infantry Division proceeded to Bgy. Buyo.
An undetermined number of suspected communist rebels reportedly ambushed the 5th Regional
Public Safety Unit while on their way back to camp.
Initial field reports from the joint police and Army units bared that several firearms were
lost during the firefight with the rebels while an M203 grenade launcher shell, 31 magazines and
cartridges for M-16, other spent shells for M-14, M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles were recovered by the
police at the encounter site.
