Korean, boatman drown

A 52-YEAR old South Korean national drowned while diving in the deep waters of Lapu-Lapu City at 12 noon Friday, a Police Regional Office 7 report said.

The body of Jin Ho Kang was plucked out from the waters in front of the Why Dive Resort in Barangay Marigondon and was taken ashore where efforts to revive him yielded negative result.

The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Mactan Doctors Hospital by an attending physician, said PRO7 director, Chief Superintendent Debold M. Sinas.

An investigation showed the victim asked a boat crew to drop him in the seawaters in front of the dive resort around 11 a.m. Friday.

An hour later, some divers noticed that the victim was not moving prompting the rescue attempt. The incident is still being investigated by the local police, said Sinas.

Over in Zamboanga Sibugay, a 39-year-old boatman accidentally drowned in a river when their boat loaded with sand capsized due to its heavy cargo early dawn Friday, police said.

The body of Nenito Salenas, a resident of Barangay Gaulan in Diplahan municipality was recovered by rescuers more than eight hours after he went missing, said Police Regional Office 9 director, Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Luis D. Licup said.

An investigation showed that Salenas and fellow boatman Eduardo Villa,56, boarded the motorized pumpboat on their way to nearby Bgy. Paradise past 2  a.m. Friday.

However, the boat capsized due to its cargo prompting Villa to swim to the side of the river while the victim decided to stay in the area while holding the bamboo guide of the vessel.

Villa said he sought help from local residents and returned to the site where he failed to find his companion. Around 11 in the morning, the body of the victim was recovered by rescuers.
