PALAYAN City, Nueva Ecija -- A supposed happy family picnic in a river turned into a tragedy after a 12-year-old female grade schooler drowned and her companion went missing here last Sunday, police said yesterday.

Chief Insp. Arnel V. Santiago, city police chief, said the incident occurred at the Pampanga River in Bgy. Sapang Buho at 12:49 p.m.
Santiago identified the young fatality as Vanna Kylle Pascua, Grade 6 pupil, of Purok Silangan, Bgy. Lusok, Bongabon, Nueva Ecija. Her cousin Crystel Ann Pascua, 9, Grade 3 pupil, is still missing and cannot be found.
The tragedy occurred when the family went to the river to eat lunch and at the same time clean up the bus driven by Vanna Kylle’s father, Alfredo Pascua, 44, a bus conductor of AL Bus Transit.
He said the victims were playing at the riverside, but at around 11 a.m., their relatives noticed that the kids were already missing and could not be found.
He said the kids were believed to have drowned after falling into a deep portion of river.
After searching, Vanna Kylle’s body was recovered some 500 meters away from the place of occurrence.
She was immediately brought by his father to the Bongabon District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by attending physician Dra. Madelyne Caillan.
The Palayan City and the Bongabon Rescue Teams are still conducting search and rescue operations for the recovery of the other victim.
The body of Vanna Kylle was brought to GH Vilar Funeral Parlor for proper disposition.
