BINALONAN, Pangasinan --  At this bustling municipality at the fifth district of Pangasinan, one need not wait for a tricycle to hail a ride.  All that is needed is a smart phone, open the Grab app and click at the GrabTrike icon to book a ride.

Through the initiative of Mayor Ramon “Monmon” Guico III, there is now Grab Trike here.

The municipal government of Binalonan and Grab Philippines, operator of an online ride-hailing apps, has joined forces and launched last Friday (October 26) Grab Trike Binalonan.

Guico III said Grab App for transportaion is usually for four wheels. Here, Grab Trike Binalonan is for tricycles, and anybody or any member of a TODA (Tricycle Operators and Drivers’) can register as long as they possess a tricycle franchise issued by the municipal government.

“Hindi ibig sabihin na mawawala yong regular na pila ng TODA.  Ito ay additional feature kung saan madadagdagan ang kita ng tricycle driver dahil sila sila rin ang pwedeng magpa-register sa Grab Trike Binalonan,” Guico clarified dispelling rumors circulated before the launch that trike drivers’ income will be affected.

Guico said there are about 1,500 tricycles with franchise in Binalonan.  100 of these availed and registered with Grab.

The mayor said it was the LGU which reached out to Grab Philippines and convinced them to bring here its Grab Trike.

“This is advantageous to both tricycle drivers and passengers. Anywhere you are, you can book a ride; for the driver, he can have a passenger, anytime.  The fare is fixed. Just like in Grab taxi, lalabas sa app kung magkano ang fare mula sa pick-up point hanggang sa destination. Kapag okay sa pasahero yon fare, and he/she acknowledges it by clicking a button sa app, yon na yon.  It is up to him if he will give a tip,” the mayor explained.

Grab Trike Binalonan, the mayor said, operates 24/7, meaning a passenger is assured he/she can ride a tricycle anytime.
