Ecija mayor wants ‘missing’ NFA rice probed in his town

SAN Antonio, Nueva Ecija -- Mayor Arvin C. Salonga has sought an investigation into the alleged “missing” government rice sold by the National Food Authority in accredited store outlets at the municipal public market here.

This after the mayor’s office was besieged with complaints through text messages grumbling about the so-called “disappearing act” of cheap NFA rice especially during periods of calamities when it is needed the most.

“Pinaiimbestigahan ko ito sa NFA kasi may mga complaints sa akin through text messages, bakit daw nawawala ang NFA rice, paano ba ang distribution nito, ’di alam kung saan napupunta parang NPA, no permanent address,” Salonga told this reporter in an interview at his office last Friday.

The mayor said at least 11 accredited NFA outlets are stationed at the public market but no prescribed time in selling the cheap government rice is being set for the buying public to know.

“Dapat sana mayroong prescribed time kung kelan itong NFA rice ibebenta para alam agad ng ating mamamayan,” he said.

Salonga lamented the lack of NFA inspectors assigned at the public market to guard against possible irregularities in the distribution of NFA rice. “Paiba-iba kasi ng inspector dito ng NFA, tapos paisa-isa lang ang naka-assign,” he said.

As a possible measure, Salonga said he is volunteering the municipal agriculture office (MAO) in assisting the NFA in the distribution of cheap rice by way of putting up at least four additional MAO-managed rice booths at the public market.

He said he is willing to forge a memorandum of agreement with NFA provincial manager Genoveva Villar about this to serve the purpose.

“Ang gusto ko lang naman, ma-distribute nang tama ang NFA rice on a regular basis para sa ating mamamayan, hindi iyung kung kailan mo mas kailangan saka wala kang mabili,” Salonga lamented.

It was learned that the 11 NFA outlets in this town were given a weekly allocation of 20 bags each with each buyer being sold a maximum of five kilos of NFA rice each.
