RIZAL, Nueva Ecija -- A police officer was shot dead by a hostage-taker after the latter went berserk and took hostage his wife’s relatives and the lawman tried to rescue the victims here last Saturday night.
Provincial police director Senior Supt. Antonio C. Yarra identified the slain lawman as PO3 Hernando Largo, 47, married, of Bgy. West Poblacion, Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija, and assigned at the police station here.
He was shot point-blank in the face that caused his death after being rushed to Dr. Rafael Clinic in Bgy. Poblacion Sur.
Yarra said Largo responded to a hostage-taking incident in Purok Kamagong, Bgy. Del Pilar at 8:25 p.m.
In said incident, the suspect, identified as Roel Jacob, 37, married, truck driver, of Sitio Kaunlaran, Bgy. Aglipay, this town, was armed with a revolver as he allegedly took hostage the relatives of his wife inside the house.
Police said the suspect fired once which was heard by the lawman, who was in the vicinity to visit a friend.
Yarra said Largo immediately responded to the house of Dely Piedad, a 67-year-old widow.
The lawman drew his pistol and entered the house through the backdoor but he was shot in the face by the suspect, who fled on foot towards the ricefield.
Yarra said pursuit operations are still ongoing for the possible arrest of the suspect.
