Carpenter dies in Laguna grenade blast

A 57-year-old carpenter died when a MK2 fragmentation hand grenade exploded in his house in Bgy. Cabanbanan, Pagsanjan, Laguna, Monday night.

Acting Laguna police director Senior Supt. Kirby John Kraft identified the victim as Nelson Romulo, alias Arnel Romulo, carpenter, of Ilayang Yuni, Bgy. Gapang San Francisco, Quezon, and presently residing in Bgy. Cabanbanan, Pagsanjan town.

Police said the incident was an accident, according to Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) who discovered  that the safety lever and the pull ring of the grenade was intact.

Investigators said the explosion transpired at about 7:30 p.m. while the victim was alone in his house.

Based on the account of victim’s son identified as Rommel Gonsalo, 23, his father, Nelson Romulo, had in his custody a hand grenade when he escaped from Mulanay, Quezon where he was charged for violation of RA 9516 (illegal possession of a hand drenade) in August 2015.
Chief Insp. Margarito Umali, Mulanay police chief,  said Romulo managed to escape from their custody and had a standing warrant for estafa.
