MORE security troops have been deployed to Lantawan, Basilan to avert a possible escalation of violence between two families locked up in a long-standing feud, the latest of which saw four wounded in a gun attack shortly before noon Tuesday, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Police Regional Office director Chief Supt. Graciano J. Mijares said yesterday.

Mijares said members of the Lantawan Municipal Police Station and the local military are coordinating their security operations with local officials and village elders in Lantawan to prevent retaliatory attacks from the protagonists belonging to the families of Jul Amri Majindi and Ibrahim Alam.

The ARMM police director said that around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, heavy fighting erupted between the two groups in Caluitan Island in Bgy. Luuk-Maluha, Lantawan, resulting in injuries to four persons, identified as Baser Sagdi, Michael Amiril, Amiril Mawali and Jalal Damsalin, all residents of Bgy. Lawi-Lawi.

He said investigation showed that the victims and their rivals were both fishing in the area onboard their ‘bote-bote’ vessels when they suddenly started exchanging heavy fire.

The gunbattle lasted for around 10 minutes with the victims, all belonging to the Majindi clan, being taken to a local hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

“The local police are still investigating the incident to determine who really started the gunfight. Appropriate criminal charges will be filed against the persons responsible as soon as the investigation is over,” Mijares said.
