5 dead in New Year’s Day fire, shooting

ANGELES City -- Three women died in a fire at a low-cost subdivision while two men were killed in separate shooting incidents here on New Year’s Day.

Chief Insp. Neil Rainier Mercado, Police Station 3 commander, identified the fatalities in the fire that gutted down a residential unit at Fiesta Community in Bgy. Tabun as Edith Guinto, 35, and her housemaids Elizabeth Bautista and Ella Bautista.

Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze that started early morning last January 1.

Meanwhile, Mercado said one Michael Mauhay, 21, of Bgy. Pampang, this city, was shot dead by an assailant inside the Fiesta Carnival in Bgy. Pulung Maragul near the city hall.

The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the city hospital.

In Bgy. Balibago, one Jonathan Montellano, 34, was shot dead after having a heated argument with two men on Hadrian Extension at 2 p.m. also on New Year’s Day.
Chief Insp. Aris Gonzales, Police Station 4 commander, said the gunman was identified as Dennis Pitpichi Palacio, 25, of Duquit, Mabalacat City.
Witnesses told police that the victim was having a heated argument with the suspect and another man when he was suddenly shot in the head at close range, resulting in his death.
The suspect and his companion ran towards the riverbank and has remained at large.
Police are conducting follow-up operations to solve the five New Year’s death cases.
