4 killed on New Year revelry in Laguna

Four persons were reported killed during the New Year revelry in Calamba and San Pablo cities and Los Baños and Sta. Cruz towns in Laguna, police said yesterday.

One of the fatalities was a tricycle driver who was shot dead in Bgy. Tuntungin, Putho, Los Baños by a neighbor who is also a tricycle driver, allegedly due to jealousy.

Police said the victim, identified as Richard Formaran, was rushed to Bay District Hospital due to open gunshot wound in the back. The suspect used an improvised 12-gauge shotgun.

Dr. Alfonso Escalona, attending physician, said the victim was declared dead on arrival due to serious wound in the body.

“Investigators said the 12-gauge shotgun was missing after the suspect, identified as Nicanor delos Reyes, shot him dead at 12:10 p.m.

Police said the shotgun was reportedly thrown elsewhere after the incident.
Investigators added that the shooting incident transpired when the suspect confronted the victim and suddenly shot him in the back.
The suspect was arrested in his house hours after the incident. A criminal complaint is being prepared for filing before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office against the suspect who was locked up in jail.
In Calamba City, a 34-year-old motorcycle-riding woman, identified as Remedios Gomez, of Majada In, Bgy Canlubang, was shot dead while her female back rider survived while passing along Athens Road, Calamba Hills, Phase 2, Bgy. Barandal.
Supt. Sancho Celedio, Calamba police chief, said Gomez sustained multiple gunshots wounds in the body that led to her instantaneous death.
Her back rider, Maricris Badillo, 31,  of Bgy. Kay-nlog, was unhurt.
Police are hunting down the suspect.   
In San Pablo City, a man was killed in mauling incident while celebrating New Year in Bgy. Santiago 1.
Supt. Gil Torralba, San Pablo police chief, said the victim, identified as Narciso, of the said barangay, was pronounced dead on arrival at PPL Hospital due to lacerations on the forehead when the suspect, a certain Rommel Abril, shot him while pacifying two brothers quarreling at 7 p.m.
Reports said the victim, together with his brother Rustico Cataag, had an argument during a drinking spree when they being pacified by the suspect.
Abril was able to escape and is now the object of a police manhunt operation.
In Sta. Cruz town, 31-year-old Delmer Garcia, jobless, of Bgy. Bagumbayan, who was under the influence of liquor, was stabbed dead by a drug addict, identified as Boyet Guevarra, after the later grabbed the money at a gambling den.
Garcia was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital due to two stab wounds in the body.
Police said the suspect is still at large.
