3 FDA chief’s police escorts killed, 3 wounded in CamSur ambush

THREE police escorts of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director General Nela Charade Puno were killed while three others were wounded when they were ambushed by suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) yesterday morning in Lupi, Camarines Sur.

Police Regional Office (PRO) 5 director Chief Supt. Arnel Escobal identified the fatalities as SPO1 Percival Rafael, PO3 Carlito S. Navarroza and PO1 Ralph Jason D. Vida.

Taken to the nearest hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds in their bodies were PO1 Jonathan P. Perillo, PO1 Ruby S. Buena and PO1 Rodolfo F. Gonzaga.

Reports reaching Camp Crame said the incident occurred at around 9:10 a.m. along the national highway in Bgy. Napolidan, Lupi, Camarines Sur.

Escobal said the victims were onboard a PNP marked vehicle escorting the FDA director general on his way to Daet, Camarines Norte when they were ambushed by some 20 NPA rebels.

Security personnel from 1st Camarines Sur Provincial Police Station immediately responded to the area and prevented the enemy from creating further damage.

In line with this, the PNP immediately coordinated with the Philippine Army units and conducted joint pursuit operation against the suspects.

Police stations in adjacent municipalities also conducted checkpoints in strategic locations in their respective areas to possibly arrest the suspects.
