GOVERNMENT forces foiled what could have been another deadly bombing incident in Zamboanga City as they
arrested two bomb experts of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) the other day in the said City.

This was confirmed by  AFP-Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom)  spokesperson   Capt. Jo-ann
Petinglay.

Petinglay said government troops first arrested ASG bomber Omar Askali, alias Ayub,  member of
ASG, Commander Furuji Indama during their operation at around 10:30 a.m. on Governor Lim Avenue in
Zamboanga City.

Recovered from his possession were one grenade, cellular phone and two identification cards.

Joint Task Force  Zamboanga commander Col. Leonel Nicolas said based on intelligence report it
was learned that the group of Askali was planning to bomb public places in the city that prompted the
troops to conduct joint operation together with PNP to  pre-empt the  plan.

“Intelligence reports revealed that the group will bomb public places in the city three days
from now. This prompted our troops to conduct a joint operation with the police to capture the bandits
and preempt their bomb ploy,” Nicolas said.

Accordingly, the suspect was a trusted man of Indama and was known to be good in making
improvised explosive device (IED) and involved in series of bombing activities in Minda-nao.

The information  also revealed that a certain Mukara Sapie, alias Mukram and Shayif, was also
sent by Indama to conduct bombing in Bgy.  Taluksangay in the said city.

Mukram was arrested in a follow-up operation in the city.

Recovered from his possession were IEDs and a caliber 45 pistol.

AFP Westmincom commander  Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez commended the troops in their successful
operation that resulted in the arrest of two bomb experts.

“Our successful offensives were complemented by the intensified conduct of intelligence
operations and the strengthened collaboration with the police, thus preempting the bandits fron
executing their terror plan. I commend the troops of the JTF Zamboanga for a job well done,” Galvez
said.
