WITH bigger salaries comes greater responsibility and discipline.

This is what Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ M. dela Rosa emphasized yesterday as he said that with their salaries doubled already, there will be no more room for rogues in the police service and that they will be punished to the hilt and immediately dismissed from the force should they continue committing grave misconduct and other irregularities.

The top cop said that he doesn’t want to see policemen who are literally sleeping on their job or are using their cellphones while on duty to the consternation of the general public.

“Hindi lang mas mabigat na parusa kundi mas mabilis na pagresolba ng kanilang kaso, mas mabilis silang madismiss, promise ko yan sa inyo. Idi-dismiss ko kaagad yung mga pulis, lalo na yung mga Police Officer 1 na times two na yung sweldo nila, gagawa pa rin ng kalokohan, pang-aabuso,” the PNP chief said when he attended the turnover of mobile patrol vehicles and sniffer dogs given to the Valenzuela City police by the local government.

The PNP chief emphasized that now that they have bigger take-home pay, members of the police force are expected to double, if not triple their efforts to keep the streets safe round-the-clock and in solving crimes as soon as possible.

“Wala naman tayo ine-expect sa mga pulis natin kundi kung na-assign siya sa patrol, magpatrolya ng husto, mang-aresto ng dapat arestuhin. Hindi yung patulog-tulog lang, patext-text lang at nag-rerelax,” he emphasized.

Officials have also said that non-commissioned officers of the PNP who usually claim low salary forced them to engage in illegal activities to feed their families and pay for their debts won’t be able to use the same flimsy excuse this year.

This after the Duterte government doubled their salary, meaning some 76,000 policemen with the rank of Police Officers 1 which is the lowest in the 175,000-strong organization starting this year will receive a 100 percent increase in their base pay. This is the result of President Duterte’s signing of the joint Congress resolution authorizing the salary hike of members of the PNP and the Armed Forces.

According to the Executive Officer of the PNP Directorate for Comptrollership, Chief Superintendent Joselito Vera Cruz, PO1s will now each receive a monthly base pay of P29,668 from the P14,834 monthly base pay last year.

The doubled salary not only will stop members of the uniformed police force from thinking of engaging in irregularities specifically extortion and drugs since that automatically would mean their dismissal from the service, it will also help attract more police applicants.

Vera Cruz expressed belief that with their doubled take-home pay, every individual policeman will now think twice before getting into trouble or committing any grave misconduct that would automatically forfeit their benefits and trigger their dismissal from the service once found guilty of the offense.
