Wage hike can ease inflation burden — solons

November 06, 2018

TWO administration solons welcomed the approval of a P25 additional wage for workers in the National Capital Region (NCR).

1PACMAN party-list Rep. Mikee Romero and Kabayan party-list Rep. Ron Salo said this amount, while not much, will at least lessen the burden of the workers at this time when the prices of commodities are rising.

Romero assured the public that the government is doing everything to uplift the lives of the Filipinos.

“It will be a good help to our countrymen. Though it’s not enough, it can minimize the problem of our fellow Filipinos. We will still find ways to make it better especially to the less fortunate,” said Romero, a solon who is known for not getting any salary from Congress but converts it to the medical assistance and scholarship fund of the party-list.

For his part, Salo said the P25 minimum wage hike can recover some purchasing power lost to inflation.

Salo further explained that if a minimum daily wage earner works 20 days in a month, the P25 increase means about P500 for the month.

“Critics would say that it is too little. Yet, 500 pesos is still 500 pesos and it helps our workers recover some of the purchasing power consumers lost when inflation rose,” Salo said.

“The wage increase is in addition to the efforts of the government in improving rice supply and greater access of the poor to discounted basic goods,” Salo added.

Meanwhile, Salo expressed hope that the Wage Boards in other regions will also immediately issue wage increases to benefit workers in the countryside.

Salo and the late KABAYAN Party-list Rep. Ciriaco Calalang are the authors of House Bill 7527 seeking to legislate a nationwide minimum daily wage of P600.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) has announced that the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board approved a P25 hike in the daily salary of minimum wage workers in the NCR,

The P10 cost of living allowance is included in the P25. The adjustment raises the new daily minimum wage from P512 to P537.
