AN ANTI-NARCOTICS operation in Minglanilla, Cebu on Monday night turned awry when the suspects
sensed the sting and shot dead a police undercover officer before one of them was gunned down by
other agents posted at the scene, officials said.

PO2 Evie Espina became the second member of the Philippine National Police to be killed in
an anti-drug operation this month, the 1st being Senior Insp. Jimmy Senosin, the deputy chief of the
Taytay Municipal Police Station, who was gunned down last February 11.
A police report said PO2 Espina was trying to buy shabu from three suspects led by Jovelio
Franza, the no. 1 drug personality in Cebu, when the trio sensed that they were dealing with a cop
in Bgy. Tulay, Minglanilla town.
Franza reportedly pulled out a concealed handgun and opened fire at PO2 Espina who died in a
local hospital while undergoing treatment of a gunshot wound in the head.
The suspect tried to flee but was pursued by other officers until he was killed. The two
other suspects managed to escape and are still being hunted.
Recovered from the possession of the slain suspect were one 9mm loaded semi-automatic
pistol, several heat-sealed plastic sachets containing suspected shabu and a motorcycle, whose
compartment yielded a grenade.
Franza left a grieving wife and four children.
