THE PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) yesterday reported at least 14,695 gamblers were arrested in their intensified anti-illegal gambling operations.
PNP Public Information Office (PIO) head Chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos said from February 3 to August 12, the PNP had conducted some 6,247 anti-illegal gambling operations nationwide.
The operations resulted in the arrest of 14,965 persons and confiscation of P5,917,282 bet money.
PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa earlier ordered his men to stop illegal gambling activities in their areas within 15 days or face possible dismissal from service.
The order was issued by Gen. Dela Rosa following the statement of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) General Manager Alexander Balutan that the PNP is “lukewarm” in their campaign against illegal gambling.
Balutan said the PCSO and the PNP signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) against illegal gambling and to protect the state-run small town lottery (STL) to increase its sales that will be used by the government to purchase free medicine for the poor.
