UNDERSCORING the importance of transparency in government, Senator Paolo Benigno Bam Aquino called on the Philippine National Police to be transparent about its operations by showing its spot reports to the Senate and to reporters.

Aquino said that it has been a practice among journalists even in the past to ask for a spot report as their basis for writing their stories.

No less than PNP Director Ronald dela Rosa at the last hearing of the public order and dangerous drugs maintained that the PNP has nothing to hide as he expressed willingness to submit all pertinent documents including spot reports.

“Kaya nagtataka tayo kung bakit ayaw ibigay ng ilang tauhan niya ang spot reports sa media,” said Sen. Aquino, referring to reports that members of media were not given access to spot reports, citing a new directive from Camp Crame.

Senator Aquino, however, expects Gen. Dela Rosa to comply with his earlier commitment to give senators a copy of the PNP’s spot reports, especially on cases of alleged extrajudicial killings and deaths outside police operations.
