PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed former Gabriela Representative and fellow Davaoeño Luzviminda Ilagan as undersecretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Duterte signed the appointment of Ilagan on Sept. 13, weeks after the ad interim appointment of former Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo was rejected by the Commission on Appointments (CA).
Like Taguiwalo, Ilagan who is known to be left leaning, served as a representative of Gabriela Women’s Party-list from 2007 to 2016.
Ilagan also served as a Davao City councilor when Duterte was vice mayor, both appointed by then President Corazon Aquino.
Ilagan’s group Gabriela is among the members of the Makabayan group, which has cut its alliance with the House supermajority.
