THE House of Representatives yesterday reprimanded ACTS OFW party-list Rep. Aniceto John” Bertiz III following his controversy that stemmed from his viral video allegedly bullying a security officer of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) last month.

Deputy Speaker and Bulacan Rep. Linabelle Ruth Villarica, the presiding officer, announced that the House of Representatives voted 159 against one and three abstentions granting the motion of House Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danilo “Danny” Suarez. Suarez said the penalty of suspension or expulsion to be imposed against Bertiz for the incident last September 29 would be too harsh and reprimanding him is enough.

Section 14 of the House rules on the conduct of House members provides a reprimand, or merely ‘a slap on the wrist.

Suarez’s motion came after Bertiz delivered a privilege speech, apologizing again to those he had offended for his misconduct, including his colleagues, family, the airport management as well as the airport security checker Hamilton Abdul.

Bertiz said he was sorry for his actions and he felt bad that the incident adversely affected his family members, especially his son and two daughters.

“Ang kabuuan ng talumpating ito ay umiikot sa iisang mensahe: patawad po,” Bertiz said in his speech.

“Naiintindihan ko po, at buong puso ko pong tinatanggap ang aking mga pagkakamali. Patawarin po ninyo ako. Patawad po dahil bilang isang lingkod-bayan, hindi ako naging ehemplo ng tuwid at magandang asal,” he added.

He also appeared to his critics to spare his family. “Ako ang parusahan ninyo, huwag na po ang aking pamilya. Ang aking asawa at mga anak, wala po silang kinalaman dito. You cannot even imagine what I and my family have to go through. Do what you want to me, but please spare my family.”

At the end of his speech, Bertiz said “I offer to God my imperfections as a person and seek His mercy and forgiveness.”

Last week, the House committee on ethics chaired by AGRI party-list Rep. Delphine Lee Gan conducted its probe on the NAIA incident involving Bertiz.
