PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday night ribbed former President Manila Mayor Joseph Erap Estrada telling him he would send him back to jail
The President made the naughty joke in his speech in Pasay City before attending the former President’s 80th birthday
In his speech before his audience at the launching of the Cine Lokal, Duterte recalled how Estrada, a deposed Philippine president, scorned him during the 2016 national elections.
Duterte, adept at impersonations, mimicked how Estrada criticized him for “copying” his messaging style but lacked his “finesse.”
“Si Erap naghihintay na ang buang, birthday niya ngayon eh. Sabi niya punta ka na ha. Tapos sabi, ‘Wala ‘yan, si Duterte, wala ‘yan, low class,’” said the President.
“Ano ha? Balik kita sa kulungan!” he joked, eliciting laughter from his audience comprising of actors, film makers, several government officials and the media.
Estrada was convicted of plunder for his involvement in the illegal numbers game jueteng among other charges. He was, however, pardoned by then President Arroyo.
Later, the President proceeded to Estrada’s birthday party at the Manila Hotel.
The President joined Estrada’s other high-profile guests, including former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, former first lady Imelda Marcos, former vice president Jejomar Binay, and former senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
One other time Duterte and Estrada saw each other in a private event was during the reception for the baptism of the President’s grandson, Stonefish Carpio, last March.
Mayor Estrada was picked to be one of Stonefish’s baptismal godfathers.
Former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo also was at Estrada’s birthday party.
All of them shared a table with Duterte and the celebrator Estrada and his wife Loi Ejercito.
Malacañang photos showed that Duterte was welcomed by Estrada’s son, former Senator Jinggoy Estrada, who was allowed by the Sandiganbayan to attend the party. Jinggoy is detained at the PNP Custodial Center over plunder and graft charges in connection with his alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam.
Senator and boxing icon Manny Pacquiao was also at the event.
Duterte gave a birthday message to Estrada, sharing “insights” on their similar experiences.
