THE chairman of the House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms said yesterday his panel will approve today a consolidated measure seeking to reset the scheduled October 23 barangay and  Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to May 2018 with a holdover provision among incumbent village officials.

In an interview, Citizens Battle Against Corruption (Cibac) party-list Rep. Sherwin Tugna, the panel chairman, assured all stakeholders that they would be given the chance to air their positions on the matter.

“The measure will be approved after thorough deliberations tomorrow (Monday),” said Tugna whose panel will meet 1:30 in the afternoon today to approve several pending bills on the postponement of the elections.

“Pero bibigyan ng pagkakataon na mapakinggan ang lahat ng stakeholders,” Tugna told Rowena Salvacion’s Buena Manong Balita over dzBB in a separate interview.

Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, who chairs the House committee on dangerous drugs and author of House Bill (HB) No. 5359 which seeks to postpone the twin polls, said Congress has still enough time to approve the consolidated bill.

“We still have enough time to postpone the barangay and SK polls. We hope Malacanang will certify the bill as urgent to make this possible,” said Barbers.
