PHILIPPINE National Police chief Director General Oscar D. Albayalde yesterday said that a total of 520 policemen who tested positive for substance abuse have been fired from the police force and more will be facing the same fate if found using shabu, marijuana and other prohibited drugs.
“I assure the Filipino people that there will be no 2nd chance for them. Once a policeman tests positive for drugs, I can guarantee you that he will be dismissed from the force since there is no room for drug-using personnel in our organization,” the PNP chief said.
Gen. Albayalde also stressed that all efforts are underway to reform the 190,000-strong police force, with programs and other measures in places to rid the organization of misfits and scalawags.
“We’re trying to change the culture in the PNP but we can’t change it overnight. I for one am hoping we can change it substantially in the near future,” he said.
The PNP chief said that the PNP Counter-Intelligence Task Force headed by Senior Superintendent Romeo M. Caramat Jr. is leading the way in identifying and arresting rogues in police uniform.
From February 3, 2017 to last Sunday, the PNP-CITF had already arrested and jailed 90 police personnel, four of them police commissioned officers, the latest of them Supt. Jowen dela Cruz, the erstwhile chief of the Bocaue Municipal Police Station.
“All of these policemen have been charged criminally and administratively, the highest-ranked of them Supt. Dela Cruz,” said the PNP chief. He added that around 1,700 other policemen are also being watched by the PNP-CITF and other PNP intelligence units for their involvement in different shenanigans.
