5 in shortlist of Chief Justice bets

October 26, 2018

ONLY five applicants vying for the chief justice post, which became vacant due to the compulsory retirement of Teresita Leonardo-de Castro recently, have made it to the official list of candidates.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, an ex-officio member of the Judicial and Bar Council, revealed this as the deadline for the submission of nomination and application expired at 4:30 p.m. yesterday.

“No additional contestants for the CJ position,” Guevarra said.

The five candidates were SC Senior Associate Justices Antonio Carpio, Diosdado Peralta, and Lucas Bersamin, and Estela Perlas-Bernabe.

The fifth candidate was junior Associate Justice Andres Reyes Jr.

Except for Reyes, the four justices have previously accepted their automatic nominations and have submitted the required documents to the JBC, the constitutional office that accepts applications, screens and nominates appointments to the judiciary.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had ruled to dispense with the public interviews of their senior justices who are aspiring to become CJ and head of the judiciary.

The SC had also exempted from public interview their colleagues who have been in the High Court for at least five years.
