THE government is working for the release of the four Filipino seafarers who were among the six crew members of a German container vessel kidnapped in Nigerian waters on Saturday.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is coordinating with the proper authorities for the safe release of the four Filipino seamen.
Foreign Affairs spokesman Roberpierre Bolivar said: “The DFA is taking quick positive measures to help our kababayans. Out of concern for the safety of our kababayans and the privacy of their families, we cannot share more information than this.”
Aside from the four Filipinos, a Ukrainian national, and a Hungarian were also taken by the pirates. The 12 remaining crew are all safe.
“The vessel was attacked by pirates early Saturday morning when it was approaching one of the ports of Nigeria,” said a spokesman for Peter Doehle Schiffahrts KG.
“Six of the crew were taken off the ship and they are now held by kidnappers in Nigeria,” he added.
