School suspends classes due to toxic chemical spill

October 06, 2018

THE Arellano University management was forced to suspend classes yesterday after a drum containing toxic chemicals spilled near the school in Sampaloc, Manila.

The Manila Police District (MPD) said the incident took place at around 3 a.m. along Legarda Avenue, in front of the said university.

It was learned that the truck carrying the drum was being driven by Aljon Porton and had come from South Harbor going to Taytay, Rizal when the container van was dislocated, causing him to lose control of the steering wheel and the truck turned on its side.

The truck accidentally hit a parked L-300 van in front of the university.  Fortunately,  no one was injured in the incident.

Clearing operations led by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) among others, was immediately done in the area to remove the drum along Legarda Avenue.

The foul and strong smell of the spilled chemicals however caused panic among the residents in the area so the university was forced to suspend classes and work.

Fire Senior Inspector Hector Agadolin of the Sampaloc Fire Station said they were not able to immediately remove the chemicals for fear that it may cause an explosion.  He said extra precaution was taken in clearing the chemicals.
