Rookie cop shoots dead 1 of 3 holdupmen

A home-bound rookie policeman shot dead one of three men who allegedly tried to rob and kill him at a
bridge meters away from the Police Community Precinct in Pasig City Saturday night.

A report submitted to Eastern Police District (EPD) director Chief Supt. Romulo Sapitula
identified the cop as PO1 Lester Galong, 32, single, member of Pasig Police Community (PCP) 4, Bgy.

According to Barangay Captain Barok Alvarez, prior to the incident, the lawman was riding his
motorcycle (4249-IW) and traversing along Javier Bridge, Bgy. Maybunga, when three unidentified men
standing approached him at 11:30 p.m. and blocked his path. The suspects then shoved his motorcycle,
causing him to lose balance, thus throwing him off the vehicle.
Alvarez said Galong allegedly tried run away but the suspects chased him.
When he was cornered him, he engaged the suspect in a fistfight. Galong again fell down on the
pavement. One of the suspects tried to grab his service firearm, triggering a scuffle between them.
At this juncture, the suspect pulled out a fan knife and tried to stab the officer but missed.
Alvarez said Galong fired a warning shot but the suspect continued to attack him, prompting
him to fire shots at the suspect.
A Pasig rescue team led by Dr. Ej Agaid-Dalutag of Pasig City General Hospital declared the
suspect dead on the spot. His two cohorts are now being hunted down by the police.
Police recovered three fired cartridge cases and one (1) fan knife from the crime scene.
