AN alleged notorious robber involved in selling illegal drugs was shot dead when he engaged lawmen in a shootout while a 12-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet yesterday morning in Caloocan City.

Joeylito Cadena, 37, of 744 Barrio Concepcion, Bgy. 188, Tala, sustained gunshot wounds in the  body that resulted in his untimely death while the boy, identified as Manny Caparas, was rushed to Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Hospital for treatment of a bullet wound in the right foot.
Caloocan Police North Extension Office (NEO) homicide investigator SPO2 Alan Budios said that prior to the incident, elements of Police Community Precinct (PCP) 3, led by Chief Insp. Ronald Cayago, were on their way to Phase 8, Package 5, Balwarte, Bgy. 176, when they chanced upon the riding-in-tandem criminals which fitted the description of their informant.
The lawmen tried to flag down the suspects but the back rider pulled out a handgun and fired at policemen, hitting the foot of Caparas, who was then walking in Phase 8.
The suspects immediately escaped, prompting the lawmen to give chase until the former were cornered at Phase 4, Package 3, Block 33, Excess Lot, Bgy. 188, Tala. Instead of surrendering, they opened fire at the pursuing lawmen, who retaliated and hit Cadena in the body while his cohort was able to escape.
Police recovered from the slain suspect a cal.  .38 revolver and four heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing undetermined quantity of suspected shabu.
The victim’s mother, Aurelia Cadena, admitted to the police that his son was involved in a series of robbery-holdups and illegal drug trade. Her repeated appeal to her son to stop his illegal activities fell on deaf ears.
