September 25, 2018

A criminology student and reportedly a member of the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) was nabbed in an entrapment operation after he was accused of extortion by a fellow student the other day, while posing as a Manila policeman.

Insp. Rizalino Ibay, chief of the Manila Police District-District Police Intelligence Operation Unit (MPD-DPIOU), identified the suspect as Garette Paul Javier, 27, a fourth year student, of 444 Gerona St., Tondo, Manila.

Supt. Lucille Faycho, chief of the DPIOU, said the entrapment operation was conducted at around 5 p.m. after a complaint was filed by Rex Viral, 23, a student at the Arellano University and residing at 2338 Jasmin St., Sta. Ana, Manila.

Viral told the police he was accosted by the suspect for a traffic violation at the corner of Avenida  and Tayuman Street in Tondo and was told to cough up P2,500.

The suspect reportedly introduced himself as PO1 Mark Espejo and claimed to be assigned at the MPD-Police Station 7.

On verification, it was found out that the suspect used to be a member of the MTPB but was dismissed due to a case of extortion in 2015.

Police said the suspect frequently poses as a cop in his extortion activities and that his victims are mostly motorists.

Charges of violation of Article 293 or robbery through extortion and of Article 177 or Usurpation of Authority and Article 178 or the use of fictitious name and concealing true name have been filed against the suspect before the Manila Prosecutor’s Office.
