A worker on a flood-control project died in a freak accident when the bucket cylinder of the backhoe installed in a barge malfunctioned and hit him twice Tuesday afternoon in Valenzuela City.

Rustom dela Cruz, 23, of 324 Bakawan St., Bgy. Camangyan, Sta. Maria, Bulacan, died on the spot from severe injuries in the body. The operator of the backhoe, identified as Dariel Timario, 21, of Castuli, Macabebe, Pampanga, fled after the incident.

Valenzuela police chief Senior Supt. David Nicolas Poklay said the incident happened at 5:45 p.m. at the flood control construction site at Riverside, Bgy. Palasan.

The victim was about to go up on a pile cap that they were building beside the river when the hydraulic hose of the backhoe’s bucket cylinder installed in a barge exploded, causing it to malfunction and crash into the victim’s body twice, killing him instantly.

A rescue team of Valenzuela City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (VCDRRMO), which responded to the area, safely removed and lifted the lifeless body of the victim from the area while elements of Police Community Precinct (PCP) 5 conducted a follow-up operation but failed to arrest the backhoe operator.
