A fire hit one of the buildings inside the medium security compound of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City yesterday, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said.

Citing reports from Bureau of Corrections Chief Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa, Guevarra said the fire took place at around 2:50 a.m. at the Sam Sung company handicraft production and work area inside the national penitentiary’s medium security compound.

He said the blaze reached the 4th alarm before firefighters from Muntinlupa and neighboring fire stations put it under control at 6:52 a.m..

Guevarra said there were no casualties in the fire whose cause is still being investigated by authorities.

“All inmates at the medium security compound were accounted for and reported complete by Camp Supervisor Artemio Martin at 7:30 a.m. with zero injuries or casualties. A total of 5,820 inmates were present and in good condition,” the DoJ chief said.

The handicraft company is operating a production facility inside the NBP by virtue of a memorandum of agreement that started, according to Guevarra, in the 1990s with the building that was affected by the blaze put up in 1998.

He added that the MoA which was formalized in 1992 has a shelf life of five years and was extended for 20 years with the approval of then DoJ Secretary Silvestre Bello III.
