A former mayor and his wife and an ex-administrator were charged with graft before the Sandiganbayan for allegedly selling their own vehicles to the government at overpriced amount.
The Office of the Ombudsman slapped with a graft case former Isabel, Leyte Mayor Saturnino Medina and his wife Nollete for “acting with evident bad faith, manifest partiality and/or gross inexcusable negligence” in the transaction.
According to the information, Saturnino allegedly conspired with Nolette to buy for the local government a Kia Pregio van (XRW 172) under the latter’s name in the amount of P546,000 when the vehicle’s supposed market value is only P396,000.
Also facing a similar case was former Municipal Administrator Perla Berante for the same alleged act after selling her Mitsu-bishi Pajero (WBN 808) in the amount of P648,500 even if the amount is purportedly just P600,000.
The Ombudsman said they gave “unwarranted benefits to themselves” in the alleged transactions that happened between August and December 2010 and caused “undue injury to the government in the total amount of P198,500 more or less, representing the overprice in the sale/purchase of the aforementioned vehicles, to the damage and prejudice of the government.”
