AROUND 40 to 60 tons of high value vegetables products from Bukidnon will be delivered to Metro Manila markets in the next few days and be sold at lower prices.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the farmers in Talakag town committed to supply weekly Metro Manila markets with their produce after he pledged P20 million for Easy Access Credit which they could use in buying the local produce.
Piñol said the supplies from Talakag could drastically bring down the prices of vegetables in Metro Manila.
“When I visited Talakag today (Sunday), large carrots were priced P55 per kilo, white Potato P30 per kilo, cabbage from P12 to P20 per kilo and broccoli and cauliflower P50 per kilo,” Piñol said.
The farmers during the Biyaheng Bukid held in Barangay Miarayon, Talakag, said the prices could sometimes go lower because they deliver their produce to their financiers in Cagayan de Oro City.
The DA will provide refrigerated vans which will be used in transporting the vegetables to Metro Manila and it will initially shoulder the transportation cost. The Talakag local government, on the other hand, will provide an area where vegetables will be cleaned and packed.
